Food
Food for Thought:
No matter how you slice it, some of the most memorable things about being on a Conservation Corps crew concern the food.
Fueling Up
One of the most important factors of getting things done is properly fueling your crew. The best part about this work week, other than serving Colorado's national forests, was getting to meal plan with my friends and come up with recipes for dinner. This past week we made Korean BBQ fried rice, gyros, Pad Thai, coconut lentil curry, chickpea tacos and potatoes, and chicken alfredo with broccoli. I love sitting around with my crew and enjoying good food that we’ve made while we talk about our work day. One challenge, though, is fitting our food in coolers for the work week; it takes some serious puzzle skills to pack everything. Even though the season has just started, I’ve definitely changed a lot of my habits so far. I’m more comfortable with waking up early now and I learned how to meal prep for the week to make sure we hit our protein and nutrient goals. At first, the thought of living outside for 10 weeks seemed intimidating, but work is a lot easier when our stomachs are full.

A Hunger Song
“Context: Our crew was driving down literally “Unnamed Road” to get to this year’s RMYC Rendezvous in Steamboat Springs. We were talking about City Market meals because that was our upcoming dinner. Then, for some reason, we started singing “Country Road” by John Denver and changing the words with City Market. It became an instant hit and mashup (note: it needs to be sung in the same tempo as “Country Road”). Here’s how part of it goes: ‘Country Road, Get me out of here, To the place, where I can eat, City Market, Let me find you, Let me eat, Country Road.’”

Junk Food Kudos
“Our project partner (Denver Water) was one of the best things about our project. They were all incredibly chill, and bought us ice pops, pizza and donuts!”
